Every child develops language at a different speed; just because your child is not saying the “average” number of words at a specific developmental milestone does not necessarily mean that they are delayed. If your child seems to be behind in this area, there are many ways you can facilitate language development before it turns into a true delay or significant problem. Please fill out the contact form, and we will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Children typically learn how to say specific speech sounds in a pattern and at different times in a child’s early years. Your child may be developing these sounds at a very typical rate, or your child may be having difficulty with the coordination, timing, and/or motor planning. Some speech sound errors are developmental errors and correct on their own over time; other errors are considered non-developmental and require skilled intervention to address. It’s very important to address non-developmental phonological processes or articulation errors early in order to prevent poor “habits” of speech which can be very difficult to reverse later. Every child develops sentence structure and expressive language at a different pace. If your child is not combining words into sentences or using as many words in a sentence as the “average”, it does not necessarily mean that there is a delay in expressive language; they may just need a little boost. If your child seems to be behind in this area or has difficulty expressing themselves, there are many ways you can facilitate language development before it becomes a true delay or significant problem.
